Small Plant Feasibility Study CDIC prepared a proposal including options for a small creamery/educational facility for Chico State. The proposal is to be discussed with faculty and administrators in Q4 2024.
Innovation Grants for Industry The Pacific Coast Coalition opened another $1.5 million for grants available to industry for innovation and plant expansion grants. Applications are due September 30. CDIC worked with the processors relations and communication team to announce the grants’ availability, and held meetings with several processors to discuss eligibility, details of potential applications. Diversifying Product Portfolio Several projects are continuing at CalPoly SLO and Chapman University to develop know how in emerging categories and support processors, as well as to serve as basis for further feasibility studies.
Fiber milks – testing a variety of probiotic and other fibers in lactose-free milk. Project at CalPoly (screening) and Chapman (applications in ESL and UHT beverages, 17 types of fibers). Fibers tested include soluble fibers with probiotic, gut health and glucose management properties. Screening for functionality of fibers in milk at Chapman University Barista milks – The benchmarking of lactose-free milk vs. plant alternatives at CalPoly was completed. The project was designed to measure the functionality of plant-based milks formulated for baristas, compare and contrast with the properties of lactose-free milks. The small study concluded “barista” milks do not offer significant advantages over other dairy milks with regards to foam volume and stability.
