This year’s contest will be complemented by an International Contest at the Pizza Expo which will feed into the main event in Napa. Also in the works is a “Tournament of Champions” later in the Fall where past winners will come together to compete. A few notes from the January 2023 Technomic Foodservice Manufacturers Meeting: FS Distributor inflation rate across all channels was 14%. Actual case/pounds were up low single digits in 2022. Top 10 distributors did not change but PFG went to #2 ahead of USF, now #3. Most think the new USF CEO will focus on an acquisition. Sysco will continue in same mode. Cash and Carry is the fastest-growing FS Sector. Projected growth rates are 9% for CnC (includes Costco, BJs, Sam’s along with RD, Gordon, Chefs Store) followed by Broadline, Systems, and Specialty. Specialty will be the slowest and relatively flat. Distributor Private Brands continue to take share away from Manufacturer Brands. Sysco is introducing AI into pricing strategies. A Distributor Sales Representative Panel all agreed they sell MFG Brands only when the Customers specifically request. They lead with in house brand and will switch out MFG Brand if possible. FS customers view in-house brands as more economical, DSRs make more money selling them, and customers stay with them as long as there are no quality issues.
