US cheese exports reached a new record high in June, climbing to 96.8 million pounds, a 31% increase over prior-year levels. That brought first-half exports to 506.5 million pounds, another record. The US continued to send large volumes to Mexico. In the first six months of 2022, the US exported 132.8 million pounds of cheese to its southern neighbor, the highest year-to-date total ever. Contacts suggest a portion of the volume was backlogged due to logistic issues earlier in the year before making it out of the country in June and July. On the import side, US cheese inbound volume pulled back slightly in June, dipping to 37.5 million pounds, down 5% year-over-year. US milk powder exports remained weak in June. Nonfat dry milk exports fell to 152.6 million pounds, 15% lower than prior-year levels. Sales to Mexico totaled 67.4 million pounds in June, up 2% on the month but down 11% year-over-year.
Dry whey exports out of the US marked their first year-over-year increase of 2022 in June. Outbound volume lifted to 41.0 million pounds, up 5% from June 2021.
