Driving Export Sales

Extending Shelf-Life to Reach Distant Markets/ Innovative Processes CDIC is evaluating the feasibility and developing the business case for regulatory approval of high-pressure technology, a process which can be applied to fresh/raw milk, colostrum, and fresh cheeses. The first step would feature a study by the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) to determine process parameters and test the resistance of pathogens. IIT is the only FDA-approved facility that can conduct such a study in the US. The scientific pre-proposal is being peer- reviewed. High-pressure processing can extend the shelf-life of products when heat-based treatments would destroy sensitive bioactive components, or have an impact on the color, texture, or flavor of the product.

CDIC is also working with Australia-based Agri Gate to evaluate the benefits for the California industry of the patented technology, which allows exports of bulk raw milk in pressurized containers. Approvals for exports to Singapore were obtained by the Australian company in August. The cost and feasibility of a proof-of-concept set of trials in California, as well as regulatory factors, will be examined in Q4.

Filling Processing Gaps: Blimling/Mc Cully Group start project CDIC, in collaboration with other CMAB departments, has selected the Blimling/ McCully Group for a “small plant feasibility study ” which intends to ascertain that the availability of one or more, flexible dairy plants would effectively support the diversification of the industry’s product portfolio. The study has started with site visits of the Chico State, Fresno State, CalPoly San Luis Obispo, and Chapman University campuses, as well as meetings with processors and potential investors. Meetings were held separately with the Dean and faculty at Chico State. Humboldt CalPoly is also studying options in the region, complementing the CMAB study, with the support of university grants
