SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Antibiotic Use at the Cessation of Milking on Milk Quality BACKGROUND: On-farm practices during dry-off include antibiotic applications that may affect animal health and milk quality. There is increased regulatory pressure to reduce antibiotic use. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether antibiotic use at dry-off negatively effects mammary immune function and microbiome composition. Identify potentially beneficial bacteria that might be used as alternatives to antibiotics. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: Dry-cow therapies can be more specifically applied to benefit the cow without increasing antibiotic use. This research will help to maintain confidence in milk as a healthy wholesome food while reducing costs due to treating high somatic cell

count cows. Researchers:
