A year for the record books: The US exported 3.5 billion pounds of dairy products in 2022, increasing 47% from the prior year. US cheese exports reached 995 million pounds for the year, up 12% from 2021. Shipments to Mexico totaled 272 million pounds over the full year, an 18% jump year-over-year. Middle East and North African nations were big buyers as well, with volumes totaling 321 million pounds in 2022, a gain of 6% from prior year levels. US butter exports also reached record volumes in 2022, totaling 144 million pounds, a 48% jump from the year prior. US imports of butter tallied 105 million pounds, a 5% increase on a yearly basis. For the whole year, the US was still a net importer of AMF despite exports increasing to 36 million pounds, +27% versus the year prior. AMF imports rose to 40 million pounds for the year, +45% versus 2021 volumes. US NDM/SMP exports totaled 1.8 billion pounds in 2022, declining 6% versus the year prior. Combined shipments to Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam were 826 million pounds, a 7% drop from the year prior.
