From social media and the internet to electric cars and the new space race, California continues to be a game-changer in many aspects of modern life. So, it should come as no surprise that the Golden State is also on the cutting edge of equipping dairy farming with the tools and expertise for creating a sustainable future and reaching climate neutrality.

In that regard, the state's dairy industry is very much in sync with goals discussed and established at the

recent United Nations Climate Summit (COP26) in Scotland, as well as California's ongoing efforts to

remain at the forefront of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

For more than 50 years, California dairy farms have been innovating to provide planet-smart, affordable,

and highly nutritious milk and other dairy products to consumers. With the acceleration of climate change

around the globe, the task has become increasingly crucial. As a result, they're leveraging new

technologies and practices that are making the industry more sustainable, while addressing climate change

and other environmental factors.

"The California dairy industry has responded to calls

for greater efficiencies to meet increasing demand

and a reduction of environmental impact - and

they're not done," says Dr. Frank Mitloehner, a

professor and air quality specialist in the Department

of Animal Science, and director of the CLEAR Center

at UC Davis, which focuses on the intersection of

livestock and the environment. "The sector continues

to pursue innovative solutions that will contribute to

solving some of our largest problems."

The California dairy industry is concentrating on a multi-pronged approach to sustainability, including

using less water, land, energy, and fossil fuels, as well as reducing the production of the greenhouse gases

methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N20) that result from producing milk.
