FDA C ommits to “Focus on Food”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is renewing its focus on food to provide healthier diets to consumers. The FDA admittedly stated they have been in the midst of backsliding in the progress that they’ve made for many years. Their renewed positi on is that every American has a right to choose what they want to eat, healthy or not.

The FDA Commissioner recently stated, “Our role at the FDA is to give people access to the facts so that they can make informed choices.”

Recently, the agency announced plans to study changing the labeling on food products. This could include definitions and information that the agency is studying to put in place to educate Americans about the nutritional content of what they are eating. The agency is working on a front of packaging seal to help consumers quickly tell when a food item meets the “healthy” standard. The FDA’s efforts in issuing the voluntary sodium reduction guidelines published last year has been adopted by many companies and is helping to reduce sodium intake, which mostly comes through processed foods.
