Investigation of Antibiotic Resistance Gene (ARG) Presence in Raw Cow Milk
BACKGROUND: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is considered safe and a source of probiotics with health benefits. They have been used by the food industry for a long time. Milk is a source of LAB. Fermented dairy products such as yogurt and cheese are products of the activities of numerous LAB. Questions have arisen about the potential presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in LAB. OBJECTIVE: Investigate ARGs in LAB in raw milk. Complete a whole genome sequencing analysis of LAB in raw milk under different farming types (conventional, organic). INDUSTRY BENEFIT: Improve understanding of the prevalence of ARGs in LAB isolated from raw milk. Improved understanding of how ARGs are transmitted. Information can be used to enhance control strategies.
