2018 March Board Book

Antimicrobial Use & Stewardship Law This is a reminder that the conditions of the Antimicrobial Use & Stewardship Law (4.5 FAC § 14400-14408) came into effect on January 1st. Medically important antibiotics that were previously sold at feed stores now require a prescription from a veterinarian within a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship. Dairy producers are encouraged to work closely with the herd veterinarian to develop an Antimicrobial Stewardship Plan that is right for your dairy. Any antibiotics deemed necessary for the treatment, control, or, in some cases, prevention of a disease can be dispensed by the veterinarian or sold by facilities licensed with the California Board of Pharmacy. There are new resources at https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/AUS/FAQs.html that describe how to find facilities in your area that can dispense medications with a veterinarian’s prescription. Talk to your herd veterinarian about how the new law might change your current animal health practices. During this transition, CDFA Antimicrobial Use & Stewardship is available to address any questions or concerns by email (cdfa_aus@CDFA.ca.gov) or phone (916-576-0300).

2018 Assessment Rate Established for the CMAB

The Department recently approved the 2018 assessment rate applicable to the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) as recommended by the CMAB Board of Directors. This producer-funded program conducts dairy promotion and research activities on behalf of California’s dairy farmers. The 2018 CMAB producer assessment rate for all milk produced in California has been set at ten cents ($0.10) per hundredweight. This rate is unchanged from the 2017 rate. As in the past, this assessment will be collected from the first handlers who purchase or otherwise acquire possession of milk from producers. Each handler shall in turn deduct such assessments from payment owed to their producers. This assessment is authorized separate and apart from the fifteen-cent ($0.15) assessment of the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDPRB), but qualifies California milk producers for a credit toward a portion of the NDPRB assessment.

Please call Dennis Manderfield of the CDFA Marketing Branch at (916) 900-5018 if you have any questions about this CMAB assessment.
